There is some type of automobile insurance law or minimum automobile insurance requirement in every single state, and the state of Connecticut is no exception. Connecticut state law requires a mandatory minimum of liability insurance on every registered vehicle at all times and there are hefty fines and serious penalties for violations.
Connecticut requires a certification for every registration and renewal for insurance coverage. Each customer has to sign a form attesting that the minimum liability insurance will be maintained throughout the registration period, and that the vehicle will not be driven without it. The minimum payout requirements are $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily harm, and at least $10,000 per accident for property damage.
Connecticut’s mandatory reporting law is aimed at protecting drivers from uninsured motorists by requiring that all insurance providers report records of uninsured vehicles to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Providers insurance records are referenced with registration records and any violations that are found are reported to the DMV for administrative action. The Connecticut DMV also pull random files for verification. Even if the insurance is dropped or canceled by the customer, the DMV is notified, and the registrant is sent a warning notice with the opportunity to enter in the Insurance Compliance Consent Agreement, obtain coverage and pay a $200 fine, or further action such as suspension of registration or loss of registration privileges for any motor vehicle may be taken.
There are many providers that can offer minimum mandatory coverage in the state of Connecticut, and a quick trip to the yellow pages or the internet will return many. Besides the familiar companies like Geico, All State, and State Farm, there are also many smaller and lesser known providers like; Edward J. McMahon Insurance, Nye Insurance Agency and The Grenauer Agency all offering coverage in and around the Hartford and New Haven areas alone.
Car insurance is serious business in Connecticut and should be taken so. Driving without it can easily land you in court with some stiff fines or even without your driving privileges altogether, so stay smart and stay legal with the required minimum coverage.
