There is some type of automobile insurance law or minimum automobile insurance requirement in every single state, and the state of Kansas is no exception. Kansas state law requires a mandatory minimum of liability insurance on every vehicle and there are hefty fines and serious penalties for violations.
Kansas requires a minimum payout of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily harm, and at least $10,000 per accident for property damage. In addition to this, all drivers in Kansas are also required to carry a minimum of $4,500 in Personal Injury Protection to help pay any medical expenses that incur for the drivers and the passengers. Kansas is also a “No-Fault” state, which means if there is an accident, both driver’s medical expenses will be covered by their respective insurance companies, regardless of who was found to be at fault for the accident.
If your coverage were to lapse for any reason, or your registered vehicle is found to be without coverage the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can suspend the registration and impose a reinstatement fee of $250. There are many ways the state of Kansas works to verify that drivers are carrying the minimum amount of coverage, including road-side check points, mail verification and data comparisons with insurance provider reports that notify the DMV of coverage lapses and cancellations.
Some proof should always be kept in the vehicle. If stopped by Kansas law enforcement for any reason you will be required to show a valid and current Kansas insurance ID card proving the vehicle is insured. Driving without proof of insurance can result in the suspension of your driver’s license as well and the registration in addition to the reinstatement fee.
All of this can be avoided by purchasing the minimum required coverage through a licensed provider. Kansas has several well known and some lesser known providers readily accessible all over the state including providers like Geico, Allstate, State Farm and several companies with websites that let you shop multiple insurance companies from one site, and even compare quotes between companies. A quick look in the phone book or search of the internet will reveal several.
The most important thing to remember to make sure are covered, and that you aren’t paying too much for that coverage. Shop around, automobile insurance is a big business and there are a lot of companies out there vying for your business.
