Cheap Car Insurance in Maryland (MD)

Every state has some form or version of mandatory minimum automobile insurance coverage, and the state of Maryland is no exception. All drivers must maintain a current policy with a registered insurance company or broker carrying the minimum coverage or better, and there are hefty fines and penalties for violations.

Maryland requires every driver to carry third party liability insurance, also known as PLPD accidental benefits coverage, and uninsured or unidentified driver’s coverage to protect against bodily harm, death or property damage. Just carrying comprehensive or collision coverage does not meet the minimum requirements.

The minimum payout requirements in the state of Maryland for the mandatory third party insurance are at least $20,000 per person for bodily injury, up to a maximum of $40,000 as well as an additional $10,000 for damage to property.

Anyone registering a new vehicle or renewing registration must sign an FR-19 insurance certificate. The signature acknowledges that the minimum liability insurance will be maintained throughout the registration period, and that the vehicle will not be driven without out it. The insurance certificate can only be issued by a licensed Maryland insurance provider, or an authorized agent of the company. The certificate is only good for 30 days, and can be sent electronically by the insurance provider.

The state of Maryland requires a current and valid insurance card to be kept in the vehicle at all times. There are serious penalties for driving without insurance in Maryland including loss of driving privileges and full financial responsibility for all injury and damage settlements resulting from an accident. Driving uninsured in Maryland could also result in an uninsured motorist fee of $150 per lapse for the first 30 days, and $7 per day for each day thereafter, plus a $25 restoration fee for the vehicle registration. You could also be prohibited from registering new vehicles or renewing registration on any vehicle until all violations are cleared, as well as a fine of up to $1000 and/or up to one year imprisonment. These penalties are in addition to any fines or penalties imposed by the courts.

The best way to avoid these penalties is simply to stay in compliance with state laws by obtaining and keeping the minimum coverage on your vehicle. There are many insurance providers to choose from including the better known companies like Geico, Allstate and State Farm, as well as several smaller local providers. A quick perusing of the phone book or search of the internet will produce a multitude of providers. Regardless of the provider you choose, the most important thing is to stay compliant and stay legal.
