Buffalo Driving Conditions

Buffalo residents face diverse driving conditions because the city receives an abundance of snow each winter. Moreover, the cold winter temperatures may bring ice rain for a particularly scary driving experience. The city receives plenty of rain year-round, so most residents are comfortable navigating wet streets in their automobile. Summer weather is warm. Therefore, dry driving conditions also occur.

Unique City Laws

The state has several laws that should be obvious to residents. For instance, in New York it is a law that a person must have at least one hand or prosthetic device to drive. Also, residents cannot buy a frozen treat from a moving truck. The truck must be at a full stop for a resident to make a purchase. You’re not supposed to wear slippers after 1 p.m. Also, you can be fined $25 for flirting.

The New York State Laws webpage lists the information.

Buffalo Crime Statistics

The same site also reported that in 2011, the city saw 15 fatal car crashes, and it specifies that drunk drivers caused 11 of them. An analysis completed by Erie.gov states that from 2000 until 2008, police arrested 3,467 people for Driving While Intoxicated, or DWI, and the state's property damage incidents totaled 372,255 according to statistical data from FBI.gov.

Though more recently in 2015, authorities reported 978 vehicle thefts in Buffalo, as well as 2,777 burglaries and 7,421 Larceny thefts, according to the FBI.

Safety Requirements

Seat Belt Laws

Under New York state law, all front-seat passengers must wear seat belts. Children under 16 must wear seat belts when they’re sitting in the front seat or back seat, while children under 4 must ride in safety seats. All kids must ride in child restraint systems until they turn 8.

Helmet Law

In New York, all motorcycle operators and riders must wear helmets.

As for bicycles, all people under 14 must wear a helmet as an operator or passenger. Children 1 to 4 also must ride in a child safety seat. Children under 1 are prohibited from riding on a bicycle.

Distracted Driving Laws

New York state law bans the use of a handheld phone or other portable electronic device while driving. Prohibited activities include talking, texting, emailing or playing games. For a first offense, you can be fined up to $200 and be ordered to pay a surcharge up to $93; the maximum fine for a second offense climbs to $250, with the surcharge staying the same. A third-time offender faces a maximum fine of $400, plus the $93 surcharge.

Impaired Driving Penalties

In New York, the legal limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for driving while intoxicated (DWI) is 0.08 percent. That limit falls to 0.04 percent for drivers of commercial vehicles. For drivers under 21, it’s even lower — 0.02 percent.

A New York driver who’s guilty of DWI or driving while impaired by a drug (DWAI-Drug) for the first time faces a mandatory fine of $500 to $1,000, a maximum jail term of one year and license revocation or suspension for at least six months. A second-time offender faces a mandatory fine of $1,000 to $5,000, a maximum jail term of four years and license revocation for at least one year. As you’d expect, penalties for a third-time offender are more severe: a mandatory fine of $2,000 to $10,000, a maximum jail term of one year and license revocation for at least a year.

If I could give my experience a zero I would! I could not be more upset by the attitude of My Realtor. She was extremely rude and pushy.

i think that willoughby insurance is an ok company not the best ive ever had but they do keep up on saving money and notify right away when a discount has come up...but overall the hours and people are not the best, they are "out to lunch" alot lately...it would be nice to go there and not have to wait for someone to come back for an hour
