"After being with my insurance company for just shy of 10 years, and after having shopped

at companies that everyone around my hometown swore were the cheapest (including unadvertised "bargain" companies and giant comparison shopping brands), I decided to shop here at CheapCarInsurance and ended up saving just under $1,100 off my annual insurance bill, which is a lot more than I ever could have imagined anyone saving, especially me, an avid online shopper and extreme bargain hunter [...]

This is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that: 1st, I had regularly asked my former insurance company for reviews and discounts; 2nd, I recently got a speeding ticket in a school zone (which I am a bit ashamed to say) just before I switched; and 3rd, that $1,100 savings was before I got an additional discount for bundling my home insurance on my policy (which is a lot lower now too).

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, 10 years of loyalty did not pay off for me, and was replaced by a 5 minute quote that will save me thousands down the road. In short, our family owns 3 cars, and my new rates are about half my old rates; so not bad for the little additional time it took to compare quotes and digitally sign a policy.

Obviously, not everyone will save nearly as much as I did, but it's well worth your 5 minutes to find out, even if you end up only saving a few hundred dollars per year, potentially adding up to thousands over a couple years."

CheapCarInsurance.net Methodology

Car insurance quotes are for one car and one driver who has state minimum coverage with $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles. The hypothetical driver is 40 years old, female, married, employed, a college graduate, and has good credit. She has no moving violations, accidents, claims, or lapse in coverage. The vehicles are assumed to be garaged on premises, used primarily for commuting, and driven 16,000 miles per year. Car insurance quotes include commonly available discounts and are estimates and not guaranteed.

Average Car Insurance Premiums

NAIC.org reports that the state’s auto insurance premiums have been consistently below the national average, and reflect the national average cycles accurately.

Drunk Driving Fatalities

Consistently below the rest of the states in drunk driving fatalities, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports Indiana’s recent increase has still left it well below the national average.

Teen Drinking and Driving

  • Indiana requires all drivers to obtain a state drivers license within 60 days of residency. New drivers and drivers with no out of state license must first apply for a learner’s permit to enable the applicant to learn to drive. To obtain a learner’s permit, an applicant must:
    • Be at least 15 years old
    • Complete an approved driver education course
    • Pass the vision and knowledge tests
    • Log 50 hours of drive time including 10 hours of nighttime driving
    • If under 18 years of age, the applicant must provide an Agreement of Financial Responsibility.
  • A probationary license is a regular driver’s license issued to drivers under the age of 18. The license can be amended to remove the probationary restriction upon the driver’s 18th birthday. Probationary licenses hold the following restrictions:
    • All occupants in the vehicle must wear a seat belt
    • For the first 180 days, no passengers may be present unless accompanied by a licensed driver age 25 or older. This individual must be seated in the front adjacent to the driver

      • Sunday through Thursday after 11 pm

    • The following conditions allow the driver to drive in the times listed above only when:
      • Accompanied by a licensed driver age 25 or older
      • Going to work, religious event or school
  • Vision Exam. Applicants must pass the exam with a visual acuity of at least 20/40 to obtain a license with no restrictions. Indiana provides multiple restrictions to allow drivers with varying eyesight driving privileges. For further information regarding vision restrictions, refer to the Indiana Driver’s Manual.
  • Knowledge Test. Consisting of multiple choice questions, the knowledge requires the applicant to demonstrate understanding of traffic signs, signals and regulations. Information included on the exam can be found in the Indiana Driver’s Manual.
  • Road Skills Test. Applicants taking the road skills test must provide a vehicle that is properly registered, insured, licensed and maintained. A licensed driver must drive the vehicle to and from the testing site.

    • Speed control
    • Demonstrate defensive driving techniques
    • Follow instructions and observing general traffic flow

    • Backing the vehicle
    • Parallel parking

Unique Laws

Many laws almost seem inexplicable, and Indiana has just a few of those on its books. One law that must have made sense at one time or another is the prohibition of eating watermelon in a city park. Of course, one that makes perfect sense would be the town of French Lick Spring’s ordinance that requires all black cats to wear a bell on Friday the 13th. And if one is driving down Main Street in Evansville, it is illegal to have your headlights on!
