Ensure that you are properly advised on your policy/coverage requirements to adequately insure your property before electing to do business with this or any other insurance company. I’ve had a policy with Allstate through this company for two years. Unfortunately, as a result of a theft in my place of residence, I had to file a claim. It was not until that incident that I realized the agent omitted to give me valuable information which impacted my claim. When the policy was taken out, the agent failed to advise me that I needed to bring in my appraisals and my jewelry pieces to have them appraised by Allstate and to also have the items individually listed on my policy (as I was told when I phoned in to file my claim). They referred to the term as "scheduled personal property." I assume this means that each item must be itemized along with its value and listed out on the policy. I was never given this information when I took out the policy. This oversight on the agents part meant that I could only get the minimum amount allowed under "Non-scheduled personal property". I was told that it was not the agents responsibility to tell me the terms, but my responsibility to let them know the value of the items. When the application was taken initially, I was asked a series of questions and the approximate value of the contents in my home was given. I did not know that information was not included in the policy. Allstate refused to take responsibility for the agent’s error and would only agree to pay the minimum value of the policy. Their position was that the claim would not be treated as an error on the agent’s part, but my error in not specifically reporting the value my jewelry. The sad part in this entire matter is that I had appraisals previously done on some of my jewelry. However, I was never advised to bring it in, or to provide them with a copy of the appraisal until after I filed a claim and by then it was too late. They advised me that information/copies were supposed to have been provided when the policy was initially taken out. In essence because it was not, they are only obligated to pay the minimum amount for jewelry (the appraisal amount did not matter). I think that insurance agents must ensure that they have the client’s best interest at heart when servicing the client. I did not find this to be the case with this agency. Failure to require this information ensures that company will always pay the minimum amount out on their claims.
