Oklahoma Struggling with Its Number of Uninsured Drivers

Millions of vehicles are on the road all across the United States. In the state of Oklahoma, many people do not have car insurance coverage. According to new statistics, more than a quarter of drivers have no car insurance coverage in the state. This is becoming a trend in many states so something needs to be done to address it quickly. Oklahoma has had this problem for more than five years straight and it has left many people in the insurance industry searching for solutions.
In Oklahoma, drivers are required to have at least liability only coverage on their vehicle. This protects them from having to deal with most of the financial liability when they hit another driver. Now that there are so many uninsured motorists on the road in the state, there could be a massive crisis for people who become involved in auto accident with those people that are uninsured.
In Tulsa, people that are uninsured and have been involved in an automobile accident will automatically have their car towed by the police. People that are insured and are hit by a driver that is uninsured should contact their own auto insurance company immediately. Some driver have uninsured motorist coverage which allows them to file an insurance claim with their insurance company if someone that has no auto insurance has hit them. They can then receive compensation to have their vehicle repairs and medical bills taken care of.
People can also file personal injury lawsuits against the uninsured driver but in most cases it is hard to get the amount of compensation in full because most uninsured people do not have a lot of money. One problem with finding a solution that work may be that many poor people cannot afford car insurance coverage. In Oklahoma, many people live at or below the poverty line and are struggling just to keep a roof over their heads. The government may need to step in and help people get insured if the unemployment crisis continues to get worse. It can be hard for people especially those with limited means to comply with the state’s mandatory auto insurance laws.
Oklahoma’s insurance commissioner needs to try to work with auto insurance companies to formulate ways that everyone can easily comply with the law. One way to fix the issue could be that people have reduced rates for insurance based on their income and the government could help with paying the difference. This would help people especially those that are poor to have a chance to follow the law and do the right thing. It will take time to find a solution but people need to try their best to turn things around in Oklahoma. No one should be afraid of being involved in an automobile accident with an uninsured driver.
