Mazda

The Mazda Motor Corp. was originally a cork business founded by Jujiro Matsuda in 1920, named Toyo Cork Kogyo. In 1931, the business moved from making tools to vehicles, with the Mazda-Go, a three-wheeled vehicle as their first model.

In 1960, Mazda released its first passenger car, the R360 Coupe.

It wasn’t until 1984 that the company officially adopted the Mazda name. The name Mazda means wisdom and is derived from Ahura Mazda, the god of light from the first civilization in West Asia.

Mazda entered the American market in 1970, selling the R100 coupe and saw instant success. Because of financial issues in the 1960’s, Mazda created a partnership with the Ford Motor Co. from 1979-2010. These two companies worked on various joint projects together.

Additionally, their partnership helped Ford and Ford-badge Mazda models grow more successful in the Asia and Pacific markets. Maza was also a key developer with the 1991 Ford Explorer model, which became the best selling sport-utility vehicle in the United States for more than a decade.

In 2015, Mazda agreed to a “long-term partnership” with Toyota. Part of the partnership includes Mazda supplying Toyota with SkyActiv gasoline and diesel engine technology while Toyota supplies hydrogen fuel cell systems.

This partnership also includes using Mazda’s latest hybrid technology for Toyota’s Prius models. Mazda has spent decades on evolving its own hybrid technology and hopes to create more environmentally friendly cars in the future.

Recent Mazda models have included SkyActiv technology that helps increase fuel economy where engine output is increased while emission levels are decreased. Additionally, this technology includes a two-stage turbocharger design and lighter weight manual transmissions.

Mazda is headquartered in Fuchu, Hiroshima, Japan and has manufacturing sites in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi in Western Japan. These facilities have unique production lines that are flexible and synchronized.

Mazda’s model designs are based off of capturing the “Soul of Motion” through craftsmanship. Mazda’s global design centers are located in: Frankfurt, Germany; Shanghai, China; Yokohama, Japan; Hiroshima, Japan and Los Angeles.

Popular Mazda models include: CX-9, MX5, CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6. Additionally, Mazda remains the only automaker to have produced a Wankel-powered pickup truck.

Mazda is heavily involved in motorsports, as many vehicles participate in various races around the world. As of 2014, Mazda is the only Japanese automaker to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Other successes in motorsport events include: World Land Speed competition, SCCA competition, drag racing and the One Lap of America race.

Additionally, Mazda sponsors hometown teams such as Hiroshima Toyo Carp (baseball) as well as teams abroad, such as the North Melbourne Football Club and the Western New York Flash (women’s soccer). Various marathon and relay races in Japan are also sponsored by Mazda.
