Driving Conditions in Wichita

Driving in Wichita can be particularly hazardous in winter weather. Kellogg Avenue and Interstate 135 both feature elevated roadways, as does K-96. Unlike surface streets, elevated roadways receive air flow on both sides. This puts them at risk of collecting more snow and ice than roads at ground-level. Until December of 2014, Highway US-54 may take longer to drive down, as it is being widened from a two to four-lane road.

Odd or Unique Laws in Wichita

Wichita has its share of arcane laws, one of which is that anyone can be jailed for up to a year if they call someone and make lewd comments. An outdated statute also states that motorists have to get out of their vehicles and fire a shot gun three times before driving through the Douglas and Broadway intersection.

In Kansas, a pedestrian crossing a highway at night must wear tail lights. In Wichita, a motorist entering the intersection of Douglas and Broadway must get out of the car and fire three shotgun rounds into the air.

Crime Statistics in Wichita

The FBI reports that Wichita experienced 19,456 property crimes and 1,901 auto thefts in 2011. In the same year, there were 181 alcohol-related fatalities in Wichita and 11,470 charges of driving under the influence in Kansas. In 2010, the state experienced 96,087 traffic accidents, 2,820 of which were related to alcohol.

In 2015, according to the FBI, 2,045 vehicles were reported stolen, and 19,652 property crimes were reported.

Kansas prohibits texting while driving, but does not prohibit otherwise using a cellphone while driving except if a driver holds a learner’s permit or an intermediate license. Breaking the anti-texting law can lead to a fine of $60.
