These type of cars have open wheel machines and with ground hugging aerodynamics, can achieve high speeds while drivers being able to maintain accurate control of the cars. In this series, famous drivers such as Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt and Al Unser created excitement during their careers in racing. The Indy Car series have raced at road courses and ovals, however the most famous race in the series, and maybe in all of racing is the Indianapolis 500, held every May at the two and a half mile track.

The success of Formula One racing in the United States is not as great at NASCAR or Indy Car. However, it is one of the most popular racing series in the world, and the series has raced in various locations in the United States including Indianapolis and Watkins Glen in upstate New York. Despite modest success in the U.S., Formula One will be returning to the United States with a race in New Jersey using a street course.

While NASCAR and Indy Car racing are probably the two most popular series, other types of racing are held in the United States. Sprint car racing is an open wheel racing series where small cars race around dirt tracks. One of the most popular series in this type is the World of Outlaws series. Endurance racing is well-known type of racing in the U.S. One of the most famous endurance race is the 24 Hours of Daytona, where teams of drivers compete in autos for an entire day and night, racing over a road course.
