One Good Reason to Shop With Us

"After being with my insurance company for just shy of 10 years, and after having shopped

at companies that everyone around my hometown swore were the cheapest (including unadvertised "bargain" companies and giant comparison shopping brands), I decided to shop here at CheapCarInsurance and ended up saving just under $1,100 off my annual insurance bill, which is a lot more than I ever could have imagined anyone saving, especially me, an avid online shopper and extreme bargain hunter [...]

This is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that: 1st, I had regularly asked my former insurance company for reviews and discounts; 2nd, I recently got a speeding ticket in a school zone (which I am a bit ashamed to say) just before I switched; and 3rd, that $1,100 savings was before I got an additional discount for bundling my home insurance on my policy (which is a lot lower now too).

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, 10 years of loyalty did not pay off for me, and was replaced by a 5 minute quote that will save me thousands down the road. In short, our family owns 3 cars, and my new rates are about half my old rates; so not bad for the little additional time it took to compare quotes and digitally sign a policy.

Obviously, not everyone will save nearly as much as I did, but it's well worth your 5 minutes to find out, even if you end up only saving a few hundred dollars per year, potentially adding up to thousands over a couple years."

Cheapest Car Insurance In Texas (TX)

The Lone Star state is synonymous with the American Wild West. The Alamo, Hell’s Acre, the Stockyards, Stephen F. Austin and a host of other uniquely “cowboy” treasures are packed in America’s second largest state. Texas holds an enormous variety of activities to keep its residents occupied. From the Gulf of Mexico beaches in the south, to the pine forests of the northeast, to the rolling hills of the central plains to the desert and mountains in the west, there is always something to see. Drivers on one border could drive all day and still be in Texas when the sun goes down. With a state so big, Texans don’t have time to waste searching for car insurance information. So to make up for what could be lost time, CheapCarInsurance.net has done the searching and brought all the important facts right here in one, neat list.

Best Cheap Car Insurance Quotes for Texas

Harris County Car Insurance

Dominated by the sprawling City of Houston and its immediate suburbs, Texas' largest county by population is not to be confused with rural Houston County. Home to more than 4 million people, a vibrant energy industry and the world renowned Texas Medical Center, Harris County lies among the flat coastal plains of southeast Texas.

Space Center Houston, the Museum District and performing arts venues such as Alley Theatre and Hobby Center are big draws for visitors, as is the world's largest rodeo in February and March. Popular unique stops include Houston's Beer Can House, Water Wall and Art Car Museum. Houston has the dubious honor of having the world's widest freeway, Interstate 10, and is among top competitors in a hotly debated but undecided title of having the world's tallest building (The Williams Tower, 64 stories) located outside a central business district.

Dallas County Car Insurance

The second most populous county in Texas is occupied by eastern part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and includes more than 30 incorporated cities and towns. Next door to Tarrant County, Dallas County is home to the famous city, NFL team and the fictional character J.R. Ewing from the TV show bearing its name.

Known for sweltering Texas summers, Dallas is many things to different people. JFK fans visit the Sixth Floor Museum/Texas School Book Depository and John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza. The Pioneer Plaza Cattle Drive Sculptures commemorate 19th Century cattle drives along the Shawnee Trail, and the 66-acre Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden provides year-round photo opps. Dallas' notorious south sector has been the focus of ongoing revitalization efforts in recent years. Trinity Groves, for example, is a sort of restaurant theme park for foodies located just across the Trinity River from downtown.

Tarrant County Car Insurance

On a map, Tarrant County is the twin sister of Dallas County, its same-sized neighbor to the east. Residents of both counties cite a difference in attitude, however. Fort Worth, which makes up a large part of Tarrant County, bears the nickname "Cowtown," and seeks to keep that vibe.

Though often accused by Dallasites of having an inferiority complex, Fort Worth has unique tourist draws such as a world class zoo and the Stockyards National Historic District. Visitors can watch money being printed at one of only two U.S. Bureau of Printing and Engraving sites that do so (no photo opps, though, cameras and phones are not allowed on the tour). Tarrant County also encompasses Arlington, home of a Six Flags theme park and water park.

Bexar County Car Insurance

Pronounced "bear," Bexar County was established in 1836, when it included almost the entire west portion of the Republic of Texas. Today, the county and its historic seat of San Antonio lie along Interstate 10 in south central Texas, a little over an hour's drive from the state capital of Austin on Interstate 35.

With its picturesque Riverwalk and well preserved Alamo, San Antonio is usually high on the list of native Texans' favorite city to visit. For several years, it held the not-so-coveted title of the Fattest City in Texas, but with its many restaurants serving Tex-Mex favorites, it is a foodie's paradise.

Travis County Car Insurance

Home to Texas' capitol city of Austin, Travis County is situated in the central Hill Country, where culture and recreation have created a rapidly growing population and a hub for the high-tech industry.

Although urban, Travis County is known for its green spaces, lakes and unique outdoor recreation such as the Lady Bird Hike and Bike Trail, Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park. Live music, art and "Keep Austin Weird" T-shirts are abundant in Texas' fourth largest city, where the nontraditional culture is inarguably very different from the rest of the state.

Collin County Car Insurance

Home to the City of McKinney and a large portion of Plano, Collin County is located in northeast Texas and considered part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. A small, northernmost portion of the City of Dallas also is located in Collin County. The namesake of both the county and its seat is Collin McKinney, one of five men who drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Many of the cities located in Collin County are only partially so: Carrollton, Celina and Frisco partially lie in neighboring Denton County, while Garland is mostly in Dallas County and also in tiny Rockwall County. Downtown McKinney features a variety of "non-chain" restaurants, antique shops and evening music popular with tourists.

As far west as one can get in the state of Texas, El Paso borders both New and Old Mexico, more than a 12-hour drive from the state's eastern border. The City of El Paso lies on the Rio Grande, just across the border from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Sunny and dry, El Paso County includes the rugged Franklin Mountains State Park. Visitors take in views of three states and two countries from the Wyler Aerial Tramway operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Hidalgo County Car Insurance

Among Texas' southernmost counties is Hidalgo, situated along the Rio Grande River and once ranked among the cheapest places to live in the U.S. Its seat is the City of Edinburg, but its largest city is McAllen. The county was named after Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the priest who advocated Mexico's independence from Spain.

South Texas is a popular destination for birdwatchers. Edinburg's Scenic Wetlands is described as the best place for viewing the area's several hundred species of birds and butterflies particularly when they are migrating south. In McAllen, the Quinta Mazatlan includes a birding center and scenic trails.

Denton County Car Insurance

Denton is part of what residents call "the golden triangle" that also includes Dallas and Fort Worth. Considered one of the fastest growing counties in Texas in 2007, Denton County is only 35 miles south of the Oklahoma border and home to the University of North Texas.

A commuter rail line through Denton County known as the "A-train" operates in conjunction with the Dallas transit system and runs along Interstate 35. Among highlights of the year is the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival and Holiday Lighting Festival held at the restored courthouse-museum.

Fort Bend County Car Insurance

Considered part of the greater Houston area, Fort Bend County has enjoyed many of the benefits of the U.S.'s fourth largest city, which lies just a 20-minute drive to the northeast via U.S. Highway 59. Like neighboring Houston, Fort Bend boasts a large number of energy-related companies and affluent communities. As of 2015, Fort Bend is the wealthiest county in Texas, having surpassed two Dallas area counties in median family income.

The City of Richmond is the county seat, but growing Sugar Land, so named because it was once a company town for Imperial Sugar, is perhaps the best known community in Fort Bend County, having been named Money Magazine's "Best Place to Find a Job" in 2014 and "Best Place to Retire" in 2016.

CheapCarInsurance.net Methodology

Car insurance quotes are for one car and one driver who has state minimum coverage with $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles. The hypothetical driver is 40 years old, female, married, employed, a college graduate, and has good credit. She has no moving violations, accidents, claims, or lapse in coverage. The vehicles are assumed to be garaged on premises, used primarily for commuting, and driven 16,000 miles per year. Car insurance quotes include commonly available discounts and are estimates and not guaranteed.

  • By law, every driver operating a vehicle in the state of Texas must hold a valid state driver’s license. The state’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) is a licensing program to give minors valuable driving training prior to allowing them to drive unsupervised. The GDL has three stages:
    1. The Learner License
    2. Minor Restricted Driver License
    3. Provisional License
  • The Learner License. This license permits an applicant who is 15 years old (and under 18) to drive only with a licensed adult who is 21 or older and who has had at least 1 year of driving experience. To apply for the license, the applicant must:
    • Complete a driver education course
    • Submit a verification of enrollment and attendance for school.
  • Minor Restricted Driver License. This license, also known as a hardship license, is available for minors who establish the necessity to drive. With this license, the applicant may become fully licensed at age 15. For an explanation of the requirements and restrictions, refer to the Texas Driver’s Handbook.
  • Provisional License. This is a regular driver license with restrictions for drivers under the age of 18. At this point, the applicant must have held the Learner License for at least 6 months and fulfilled all the requirements associated with it. The restrictions include:
    • The applicant is permitted only one unrelated passenger under 21.
    • The applicant is restricted from driving between midnight and 5am unless driving to/from employment, school activity or medical emergency.
  • Once these requirements are fulfilled and the driver turns 18, the Provisional License will become an unrestricted Driver License.
  • Vision Screening. 140 degree peripheral vision and at least a 20/40 visual acuity with or without corrective lenses is required to obtain an unrestricted license.
  • Knowledge Test. The knowledge test evaluates the driver’s understanding of basic traffic concepts included in the Texas Driver’s Handbook. A passing score of 70 percent is needed.
  • Road Test. The test consists of four skill areas:
    1. Vehicle control
    2. Observation
    3. Positioning
    4. Signaling
  • The driver’s handbook details each skill area with specific required actions that the test administrator will include in the test.
  • Fees:
    • Learner License (under 18): $16
    • Driver License (under 18): $16
    • Driver License (Ages 18-84): $25
    • Driver License (Ages 85 and up)D: $9

Unique Laws

Nothing says “Cowboy” quite like Texas, and some of its laws make it clear that Texas isn’t trying to hide that fact! For instance, only a man who owns 10 or more cattle is permitted to tuck his pants into one boot. When riding one’s horse at night, it is unlawful to forget to attach its taillights. Emitting offensive odors is prohibited while in an elevator. Cattle thieves can be hanged on the spot, and it is legal to ride one’s horse into a saloon!
