New Jersey is known as the “Garden State” and its politicians are trying to lower car insurance rates for its residents. One way that the issue is being addressed is by trying to change the state’s auto insurance laws regarding personal injury protection.
New Jersey is known for being one of the states that has had rising auto insurance costs. In 2003, when former Governor Jim McGreevey who was a democrat was in office, he worked to try to lower car insurance premiums. He did this by encouraging competition amongst the insurance providers in the state and by allowing consumers to have more buying power.
Health care costs have been on the rise for more than a decade so state and local politicians want to change how doctors and other medical professionals can bill auto accident victims for the services that have been rendered. Many drivers have had their accident claims denied because of enormous bills that were issued by doctors so dealing with this issue could reduce the claim amounts that auto insurance companies have to pay out after accidents occur.
The main reason behind car insurance premium increases has been the expenses caused by personal injuries. The risk pool in insurance companies allow for these expense to be covered by all of the insurance premiums that are in the pool. When personal injury expenses go up each year then insurance premiums need to go up as well to compensate for the monetary losses that are incurred.
Some doctors and hospitals may have been overcharging accident victims for their medical care because they know that the auto insurance company will be responsible for paying for most if not all of the costs. This is why they were billing accident victims more than the list rate than a patient who was off the street. The state is going to address how payments are made to doctors so that they get the list rate for the care that is provided. This will help to save a lot of money for insurance companies and New Jersey residents that are insured. Currently, $1.23 cents is paid out to pay for personal injuries and other expenses for each $1.00 that drivers pay for their monthly car insurance premiums.
This move is a good one for the state of New Jersey because it can really help to make the necessary changes so that lower car insurance premiums are possible for drivers. New Jersey has a high unemployment rate right now so the state needs to do something to curb insurance costs so that people can save as much money as possible. In this situation, the insurance companies have to look out for their policy holders so that both parties can do what is best for them financially. The financial abuses that were going on with car accident claims over the past decade has cost people millions of dollars which is unfair to those individuals that struggle each month to make ends meet.
Doctors will still be able to charge accident victims and insurance companies for their services but they cannot bill for their services about the list rate. Many medical professionals may not like it, but it will help to make things better for all of the drivers in the state. Hopefully, in the next year New Jersey residents can begin to see their car insurance premiums go down so that they can save some money because there needs to be more relief for people that are struggling right now just to make ends meet.
